A sapling is a little seed which has just begun to grow. Colloquially used it can also mean “young man”. It is Father’s Day in Germany today and I feel so very old and so very young at the same time.
I was playing this melody in front of my boys for the last 2 to 3 months. At first, I thought I wouldn’t even make it a song, but then I considered the circumstances I was playing it in, the beginning of spring when the melody was born and the lightheartedness of this very easy yet sweet song.
It is naïve and somewhat incomplete. You could say the melody has potential to grow and become a greater version of itself. To me it conveys beautiful simplicity and simple beauty. In its current state that is.
You see, a song a musician writes never stays exactly the same. I know that from looking at my heroes and by talking to some of them. Over the years things are being added and removed. Ever filing on those fine details. A song in its current state represents the changes we underwent in our life.
So, “normal” songs change anyway - however - for “Sapling” I made a plan. I am embarking on a journey. Every now and then, I intend to return to this song and expand on it by writing some new notes for it. Maybe I’ll remove a couple of bars as well. Who knows. I don’t. Not right now at least. Right now, this is the definitive version of the song.
I love this sweet little songs as it is. But should it stay the same, when it could become so much more?
I am interested to see what the actual version in 10 years might look and sound like. Maybe the sapling might grow into a mighty tree just yet…

A little plant - already beautiful as is - with the potential to grow into a majestic tree. Been playing this song in front of my boys for a while so I figured a recording is due. My intention is to further develop the song over the years and make it more intricate, richer, and longer.
